CLAREMONT : Noted Environmentalist Carl Feldmeth Dies
Carl Robert Feldmeth, a nationally recognized biologist and director of the Roberts Environmental Center at Claremont McKenna College, has died of liver cancer at his home in Upland.
Feldmeth was 52.
Claremont McKenna President Jack Stark said the school was deeply saddened. “His death leaves a tremendous void. . . . He was very popular among the faculty, staff and students.”
While at the college, Feldmeth pioneered an academic major combining environment, economics and politics to train a new generation of young leaders to confront environmental challenges.
Feldmeth founded the Roberts Environmental Center at Claremont McKenna, which is an educational and research institute that allows students to study environmental problems in connection with politics, economic forces and scientific data. His recently completed book, “Natural History of the Islands of California,” will be published by the University of California Press this fall.
Feldmeth taught at UCLA before joining Claremont McKenna. An active member of his church, Feldmeth taught adult Sunday school for 25 years, initially at Pomona First Baptist Church and later at Hillside Community Church in Alta Loma.
The family has asked that memorial donations be made to the Robert Feldmeth Memorial Scholarship Fund at the Claremont McKenna College.
