Hurricane Expected to Miss Hawaii
The most powerful hurricane ever recorded in the central Pacific was on track Wednesday to pass 350 miles south of Hawaii, forecasters said.
Hurricane Emilia, packing sustained winds of 160 m.p.h. with gusts to 195 m.p.h., was expected to move past Hawaii today. While the storm was not expected to cause problems for the state, forecasters warned that it could change direction.
“This is a very dangerous and powerful storm,” said Dick Sasaki, a forecaster with the National Weather Service. The storm is listed as a Category 5 hurricane--the most powerful storm designation.
