Fullerton Voters Want an Election, and They’ll Get It

Share

* Recent editorials, letters to the editor and news reports regarding the controversy surrounding the forthcoming Fullerton council election may have created a misperception in some minds. Current published accounts appear to imply that voters in the June 7 recall election called for a special election as opposed to electing recalled council member replacements during the next general election.

The fact is our ballot choice was between a special election and replacement by appointment, should the recall prevail. Thus, the majority of voters opted to have recalled council members replaced by the election process rather than by appointment by the remaining two council members.

Because of the ballot options given, I voted for replacement by election. However, if the ballot choice had been between a special election and the general election, and had related costs been accurately established and effectively communicated to the voting public, I would have opted for the Nov. 8 general election. I believe a large number of Fullerton voters would have done the same if for no other reason than to save the estimated expense of a special election.

* Enough of this self-serving blathering about “honor” among the three recalled Fullerton City Council members (Hal McDonnel, Letters, July 17).

He thinks they should resign at once--which would create difficult legal problems that might not be sorted out for ages. In any case, he wants the special election to fill the three seats held as early as possible, not consolidated with the November general election.

If Mr. McDonnel is interested in honor, why doesn’t he mention that the earliest possible date for a special election would be Oct. 18--barely three weeks before the general election at which time this matter will be settled.

It is the height of foolishness to have an election whose outcome might be reversed only three weeks later.
