4,000 Threaten to Strike GM Assembly Plant: Members of the United Auto Workers union were bargaining for a local contract at the Detroit-Hamtramck facility that builds most of the Cadillac line for General Motors Corp. Negotiators for UAW Local 22 and the company planned to meet through the night Tuesday. Unresolved issues involve safety, health, staffing levels and use of outside contractors. Workers were prepared to strike at 10 a.m. EDT today if no deal was made. “We’ve got more demands on the table than (can be handled in) the amount of time till the deadline,” said Nate Gray, Local 22 plant chairman. “We’ll be on strike unless they do some tall bellying up to the table.” GM would not comment.
