The Wilmington Chamber of Commerce will focus on Latino businesses this fiscal year as it aims to double its membership to about 600.
“We want to involve the Hispanic community much more than we have,” said newly appointed President Marge O’Brien. “Wilmington is 70% Hispanic and I think we should have a least 70% Hispanic membership.”
O’Brien, a member of the chamber since 1987, said more active members are needed to revitalize the city’s downtown area.
“For too long Wilmington has been seen as just a backwater of the harbor. With additional support, we can benefit the entire community,” she said.
The chamber also wants to repaint the Drum Barracks Civil War Museum on Banning Boulevard. “It hasn’t been painted since 1976. It’s a national monument and I think that’s a disgrace,” O’Brien said.
A membership drive will be held Aug. 16-18.
