IBM to Inform PC Employees of Cuts: The company said it will announce Friday an expected consolidation in its personal computer operation, eliminating up to 20% of its job force in that sector. The 1,500 to 2,000 cuts will come as IBM moves more of its PC offices and employees to Research Triangle Park, N.C., its chief manufacturing site for desktop and laptop computers. The moves, which will occur in phases during the next year, involve development teams in Boca Raton, Fla. and Lexington, Ky., and procurement personnel in Atlanta and elsewhere. Some employees at the division’s headquarters in Somers, N.Y., will also be moved. IBM employs between 10,000 and 11,000 in its PC operations.
