ALHAMBRA: Two Alhambra women were killed in a traffic accident July 21 in the 1800 block of West Valley Boulevard. Eva Palacios, 73, and Hortensia Rodriguez, 71, were traveling east in a white 1989 Mercury when it was broadsided by a white 1994 Acura Integra. The women were taken to Los Angeles County Medical Center, where they died a short time later. The driver of the Integra, Teo Van Pham, 24, of Rosemead was also taken to the medical center for treatment. He is being held at the jail ward of the medical center on suspicion of two counts of vehicular manslaughter. Police said that witnesses told them the Integra was traveling faster than 60 m.p.h.

ALHAMBRA: An armed robber broke into a couple’s home July 21, took the wife hostage and released her three hours later. The victims, a 70-year-old man and his 69-year-old wife whose names were not released, were in their home in the 100 block of South Cordova Street when a man broke in just after midnight and robbed the couple at gunpoint. He then forced the woman into the family’s car. The woman was released a mile away from her home, police said. The robber escaped with a small amount of cash and is still at large.

ARCADIA: A Bank of America branch was robbed the afternoon of July 21. The robber entered the bank in the 100 block of East Foothill Boulevard, pretended to have a weapon and demanded money from a teller. He escaped with about $430 in cash in a silver Hyundai driven by another man, police said.

AZUSA: An 18-month-old girl was killed Friday night when her parent’s car was rear-ended by a suspected drunk driver. The child, whose name was not released, was in a child restraint seat in the back of the car, which was stopped at a red light at 1st Street and Cerritos Avenue. The baby suffered head injuries and was taken to Children’s Hospital in Los Angeles, where she died the next day. Police arrested Jose Medrano, 25, of Rowland Heights on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.

CLAREMONT: Police arrested three juveniles July 21 on suspicion of burglary and possession of stolen property. The names of the juveniles--two males and a female--were not released because of their ages. They were arrested at 11 p.m. at the Peppertree Shopping Center at the intersection of Arrow Highway and Indian Hill Boulevard. The suspects had allegedly broken into six cars in the shopping center, stealing cassette tapes and other property. They were released to their parents.

CLAREMONT: A 19-year-old Upland woman who was found unconscious and dehydrated in her car last week in a Claremont flood control channel has regained consciousness and is out of critical condition at USC University Hospital. Melissa Pillow, who recently completed her freshman year at Cal Poly Pomona, was driving home after midnight last week when her car left the road and dropped 40 feet into the channel. She was found more than 30 hours later.

INDUSTRY: A 32-year-old Norwalk man was shot and killed Sunday night in the 3200 block of Gilman Road after he apparently argued with another man. Jose Guerra was shot several times in the upper body at 5:50 p.m., sheriff’s deputies said. The killer fled the scene.

INDUSTRY: A sheriff’s substation will soon open at the Puente Hills Mall. The multipurpose station, which will also serve as a mall security office and community center, is scheduled to open July 29 and will be open seven days a week during regular mall hours. Mall security and sheriff’s deputies will use the center for work with business owners on crime prevention, report preparation and Sheriff’s Department training. The center will also be staffed by civilian volunteers trained by sheriff’s deputies.

LA VERNE: A 16-year-old Altadena boy disguised in a false beard, mustache and theatrical makeup was arrested July 21 when he tried to buy alcohol at a supermarket by using fake identification and someone else’s checkbook. The boy, whose name was not released, was arrested on suspicion of forgery and on suspicion of violating an obscure penal code section that makes it illegal to use a disguise in the commission of a crime, police said. The juvenile entered a Lucky supermarket in the 2300 block of Foothill Boulevard and tried to buy alcohol, paying for it by writing a $41 check. The clerk called the bank because the check was from out of town and discovered that the account had been closed. The youth was released to the custody of his mother.

MONROVIA: A dozen sheriff’s deputies and Monrovia and Irwindale police dispersed about 50 suspected gang members who were hanging out and drinking beer in a county park Saturday night. Charles Bennet, 33, of Monrovia and Diamond Anderson, 20, of Fontana, were arrested on suspicion of inciting to riot at Pamela Park about 7 p.m.

POMONA: One man and three male juveniles were arrested Friday on suspicion of commercial burglary after they allegedly broke into a gun store in the 400 block of East Holt Avenue. Elbert Rider, 18, of Fontana, two 16-year-old boys from Fontana and a 16-year-old boy from Bloomington were arrested at about 3:40 a.m. Police said the robbers stole four shotguns and four high-powered rifles.

SAN GABRIEL: A 17-year-old San Gabriel boy was killed Saturday night in a drive-by shooting. Police responded to a call of shots being fired in the 900 block of East Broadway at about 9 p.m. They found the boy, a known gang member, lying on the sidewalk. He had been shot in the upper torso with a large-caliber revolver, police said. They did not release the victim’s name because they had not yet been able to locate and notify his parents. Two males fled the scene in a dark Cadillac.
