A young brother and sister were apparently engaged in horseplay when they slipped and hanged themselves in a tragic accident, police said.

“They apparently hanged themselves with a rope that was on a tree,” Sgt. Joe Forti of the North Las Vegas Police Department said Tuesday. “There were no signs of foul play. It appears it was just two tragic accidental deaths. They were engaged in horseplay and a tragedy occurred.”

Forti said there were chairs nearby that had been tipped over and it appeared the victims, a 12-year-old girl and 10-year-old boy, had been standing on them.

“The preliminary indication is they were just kind of playing and things got carried away,” Forti said.

Forti said the mother of the victims was in California and that the children had been staying with relatives. He said the mother had been notified of the tragedy and that police planned to talk to her when she returned to Las Vegas.

The names of the victims were not released.
