OC HIGH: STUDENT NEWS AND VIEWS : A State of Mind
Virginity is only a state of mind.
That’s the message some New York City educators want to get across to sexually active teens: It’s never too late to become a virgin. The name for the concept? Secondary virginity.
It’s “a nice way of saying that even if you have been sleeping around for years, you can be clean again,” one proponent said.
“What is wrong with telling a child that it’s a good idea to stop (having sex)? That is what we promote for drugs,” board of education advisory member Liliana Trivelli said.
But the board’s student representative, Andrea Schlesinger, 17, said she doesn’t think the idea will apply to most of her peers.
Secondary virginity implies that “you can make up for your mistake,” Schlesinger, 17, said. “For many young people, it was not a mistake.”
