A Simi Valley defense contractor has received an $11-million contract to fine-tune artillery detection equipment designed during the Gulf War.

Whittaker Electronic Systems, which employs about 350 workers, will begin work on the contract immediately, company spokesman Jack Cannady said.

Under the two-year contract, Whittaker will design three miniature versions of an electronic device called the Shortstop Electronic Detection System.

The device, which operates on radio frequencies, seeks out incoming artillery and detonates it midair before it reaches a target.

The company has no plans to hire additional workers to work on the project, Cannady said.
