The Houston Oilers aren’t giving up their quest for a new downtown domed stadium. The club released a study saying such a facility would attract 3.7 million visitors and $165 million in revenue to Houston every year.

The report, commissioned by the Oilers, also says a new dome would bring such events as a Super Bowl to Houston without substantially hurting the county-owned Astrodome.

The signing of Tampa Bay’s quarterback of the future hasn’t changed Coach Sam Wyche’s short-term plans for the Buccaneers offense. Craig Erickson will take the first snap in tonight’s exhibition opener and share playing time with Casey Weldon and Mark Vlasic against the Cincinnati Bengals.

First-round draft pick Trent Dilfer, who signed an eight-year, $16.5 million contract on Thursday, will not play. “He’s a good young talent, but we can’t slow down to let him catch up,” Wyche said. “He’s got to run faster, and we’ve got to keep moving forward.”

Unless Dilfer overcomes missing 11 days of training camp and five weeks of the Bucs’ voluntary off-season program in a hurry, Erickson will remain No. 1.
