The Occupational Safety and Health Administration issued regulations Monday aimed at protecting nearly 4 million workers, especially maintenance workers and auto mechanics, from exposure to asbestos.

The regulations require that any worker who may come across loose asbestos must be trained on how to avoid disturbing it and in some cases be provided with protective equipment, such as a respirator.

The rules also reduce the maximum permissible exposure to asbestos from 0.2 fiber to 0.1 fiber per cubic centimeter of air.
