Chrysler May Abandon Sport Utility Vehicle: The auto maker said concern about future fuel-economy laws covering light-duty trucks has prompted it to reconsider the $100-million project. The vehicle, tentatively named the Dodge Adventurer, was intended to compete with Toyota Motor Corp.’s Land Cruiser and Land Rover’s Range Rover in the fast-growing luxury sport utility market. Rules now call for each manufacturer’s truck line to achieve an average of 20.5 miles per gallon. The government is considering raising that by as much as 25% over the next 10 years, a standard that auto makers would find harder to meet. The Adventurer, based on Chrysler Corp.’s Dodge Ram pickup, had been expected to make its debut in the 1997 model year.
