Economic Literacy

Share

* “Many Adults Lag in Reading, Math” (Aug. 2) provided readers with important information on the literacy problem. But what about economic literacy? People who have trouble “signing their names on bank deposit slips” are not only lacking in reading skills, but probably economically illiterate as well. They are certainly not equipped to function fully in our increasingly complex society.

We need to bring economics education to children in elementary school. Teaching third- or fifth-graders the financial rewards of completing their education will keep more of them in school, where they can improve their reading and math skills.
