Sabine Appelmans of Belgium was one of four seeded players to win second-round matches at the Virginia Slims of Los Angeles on Wednesday, but No. 16 Pam Shriver was upset by Elena Likhovtseva of Kazakhstan, 6-0, 3-6, 7-5.

The second round was scheduled to be completed Wednesday night when defending champion Martina Navratilova, seeded second, was to face Alexia Dechaume-Balleret of France.

Appelmans, seeded eighth, overcame a miserable second set to defeat Tami Whitlinger-Jones, 6-2, 1-6, 6-2.

Meanwhile, No. 10 Amy Frazier rolled past Christina Singer of Germany, 6-1, 6-2; No. 12 Patty Fendick rallied for a 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 victory over Laura Golarsa of Italy, and No. 15 Kimberly Po breezed past Melissa Mazzotta of Venezuela, 6-3, 6-0.

In other second-round action, Patricia Hy of Canada eliminated Mercedes Paz of Argentina, 6-0, 6-4; Ann Grossman rallied to defeat Asa Carlsson of Sweden, 5-7, 6-3, 6-4; Sandrine Testud of France topped Maria Jose Gaidano of Argentina, 6-3, 6-3, and Angelica Gavaldon downed Kyoko Nagatsuka of Japan, 6-2, 6-1.

Paz was added to the draw Tuesday as a replacement for third-seeded Lindsay Davenport, who withdrew from the tournament because of a pulled calf muscle in her left leg.

Appelmans needed 1 hour 42 minutes to defeat Whitlinger-Jones. After holding service on the first game of the second set, Appelmans lost the next six games. But she rebounded in the third set, winning the first three games and three of the last four.

Shriver, 32 and ranked 48th in the world, was dominated in the first set by Likhovtseva, who is ranked 57th. But Shriver won the second set and the players held service in the first 11 games of the third set. Then, Likhovtseva broke Shriver to end the 1-hour 47-minute match.

“I was worried I wasn’t going to get into the match,” Shriver said. “She played well, and she didn’t do badly later, either. She came up with the good stuff. I had my chances in the middle of the third set, I had her 0-30 in the seventh game and 30-30 in the ninth game, and I should have won those games. My serve was part of my game that disappointed me. Mentally, she was very tough at the end.”

Likhovtseva, 19, said the first set was easy, but then she ran into problems.

“I thought she’d keep the same game, she raised her game,” Likhovtseva said. “I was afraid I couldn’t win the third set. This is my biggest win.”
