This town’s only police officer has been accused of staging his own shooting.

James Little said someone shot him Aug. 11 as he was in the parking lot of a diner in this town 70 miles north of Pittsburgh, Pa.

Two helicopters and dozens of police from several counties and five state police posts rushed to the diner and searched nearby forests, but no suspect was found. Police said there were bullet holes in Little’s cruiser.

But now police say Little, 33, took off his bulletproof vest and fired into it to make it appear that he had been shot. He was treated for a bruise and released.

Little was charged Wednesday with lying to police, unsworn falsification to authorities, making a false alarm to police and tampering with evidence.
