Steven B. Engle has been named president and chief operating officer of La Jolla Pharmaceutical Co. Engle, 39, succeeds Joseph Stemler who continues as chairman and chief executive. Engle was previously executive vice president and chief operating officer of the San Diego-based company which develops drugs for diseases caused by antibodies, such as systemic lupus and myasthenia gravis.
