WESTMINSTER : School Uniforms May Be on the Way

Share

Students may start wearing uniforms by the middle of the school year under a policy being considered school by the Westminster School District Board of Trustees.

The board is seeking comments and suggestions on the proposed policy, which would allow individual schools to adopt uniforms if parents showed interest in having them, said district spokeswoman Audrey Brown.

She emphasized that under the plan, wearing the uniforms would be strictly voluntary.

Many parents favor the plan, Brown said, “because they’re afraid of gangs and discipline problems and (worry about) health and safety. Plus, it’s a lot simpler to choose school clothes, and uniforms could be a lot cheaper because you don’t have to pay for the designer stuff.”

In a recent survey of parents and staff, 1,073 people said they preferred having uniforms as an option while 445 opposed the idea, Brown said.

The board will consider adopting the policy in October. If approved, schools could begin surveying parents to determine if they desired the uniforms, Brown said.

To offer comments on the proposed board policy, parents should call their local schools.
