Ferry Captain Loaded Rice on Crowded Boat
Associated Press
CHANDPUR, Bangladesh —
A ferry captain loaded hundreds of bags of rice on an already crowded boat shortly before it sank, survivors said Sunday. About 350 people were missing and feared dead in the disaster.
Passenger Abdul Khaleque said the extra weight of the rice caused the ship to overturn.
The double-decker ferry was carrying about 410 passengers, double its authorized load, when it capsized and sank Saturday near Chandpur, 40 miles south of Dhaka.
About 60 people were rescued.
