United to Take Over Denver Baggage System: The airline said it will assume control of the problem-ridden automated system at the new Denver International Airport as part of a deal with the city to open the facility by Feb. 28. “This will be a United automated baggage system, not an integrated baggage system,” United senior vice president Steven Steers said. The city will proceed with plans for a $50-million alternative baggage system using conveyor belts, tugs and carts that will be used by other carriers until the automated system can handle the load. Denver has repeatedly delayed opening the new $3.7-billion airport because of problems with the high-tech baggage system.
