WORLD IN BRIEF : PAKISTAN : Expulsion of Illegal Immigrants Planned
The government said it is planning to expel about 1 million illegal immigrants living in Karachi, Pakistan’s largest city and commercial center. “A strategy is being finalized to expel these immigrants,” Interior Minister Naseerullah Babar said in reply to a question in the National Assembly. Officials and welfare organizations have complained that large-scale illegal immigration has contributed to violence and drug trafficking in Karachi. Most of the immigrants are from India, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Myanmar and Iran.
