Jury Weighs Exxon Damages: Attorneys for fishermen, Alaskan natives and others suing Exxon Corp. asked a federal jury in Anchorage to charge the company between $5 billion and $20 billion as punishment for causing the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill. The amount differs from the $15 billion that attorneys have been saying they would seek from the jury. Closing arguments were made in the trial, where a jury will decide how much Exxon should pay in punitive damages for causing the worst oil spill in U.S. history. Attorneys for Exxon said the company has already paid enough, about $3.5 billion in penalties and cleanup costs.
