PALOS VERDES ESTATES : New Police Dog Sought as Donations Mount

Local citizens have made it a little easier for the Police Department to purchase a new police dog, which could cost up to $10,000.

At last week’s City Council meeting, the city received a check for more than $6,600, and was told that an additional $1,600 has been pledged.

City officials say they are still searching for a dog, which must perform duties ranging from meeting the public to sniffing for drugs.

“Half the job is public relations,” said Lt. Ed Jaakola, pointing out that police dogs frequently visit area schoolchildren. The department’s previous canine, Bandit, was put to sleep in July after failing to fully recover from surgery.
