Cereal Maker Tinkers With the ‘Classics’: Minneapolis-based General Mills Inc., second only to Kellogg Co. in the ready-to-eat cereals market, has new recipes for its top-selling Cheerios and “Breakfast of Champions” Wheaties. The strategy is seen as a response to competition at the breakfast table from no-name and me-too cereal brands. “New better-tasting, crispier Cheerios and an improved Wheaties with a milder whole-grain flavor began arriving on grocers’ shelves in late summer,” General Mills said in its 1994 annual report.
