SUN VALLEY : Low-Income Housing Under Construction

Share

After a shaky start, construction has begun on a low-income family housing project in Sun Valley.

The 18-unit housing project at 7843 Vineland Ave. will take about nine months to complete. But officials of the L.A. Family Housing Corp., which is spearheading the project, are happy to get the building under way.

“It feels incredible because the need is so big,” said Vera Fleischman, director of housing for the nonprofit group. “We have at least 20 people coming every day wanting to be on the waiting list.”

The project suffered a minor embarrassment in April when officials held a groundbreaking before the city had approved the expansion of the facility from 14 to 18 units. The issue was settled in July, when the City Council approved the plans for the additional units.

The new facility, to be called Vineland Place, will offer a variety of services for the homeless and for low-income families getting back on their feet.

Those services include job training and placement and instruction on how to manage their personal finances provided by L.A. Family Housing. The facility also features a play area for children, a vegetable garden and a common recreation room.

The project is expected to cost $2.5 million. L.A. Family Housing Corp. is working in partnership with the California Equity Fund/LISC and the Los Angeles Housing Department, with additional support from the Bank of America and Citibank.

The Vineland Place project is the fourth permanent housing project developed by L.A. Family Housing Corp. in the San Fernando Valley. The three others are located in North Hollywood.
