MCI-Nextel Talks Declared Dead: The nation’s second-largest long-distance company has terminated negotiations with mobile radio company Nextel Communications Inc., snuffing out hopes that a scrapped $1.3-billion alliance could be salvaged, MCI officials said. MCI Communications Corp. spokesman Kevin Inda said prospects for an alliance between the two are “completely off the table.” MCI had been trying to renegotiate an agreement with Rutherford, N.J.-based Nextel since Monday, after announcing that a tentative agreement reached in February had been shelved. Negotiations with Nextel fell through after the companies were unable to reach an agreement with Motorola Inc., a large shareholder in Nextel, Inda said.
