Microsoft Christens Windows Upgrade: The software company will announce today that the official name for its upcoming Windows software upgrade, now commonly referred to as Chicago, will be Windows 95. The new name is more than a little ironic given that the original release date for the operating system was set for December, 1993. Given that the program won’t be available until about May, 1995, “they should have called it Windows 95.5,” says Jesse Berst, editorial director at Windows Watcher, a Redmond, Wash.-based newsletter. The new name will appear on the Windows logo besides the familiar flag symbol. Software developers will be expected to make their software compatible with Microsoft’s new upgrade in order to use the Windows logo, a policy that has drawn criticism from wary developers.
