FAMILIAR STROKES

“The Swimmers” (photographed by Gregg Segal, Aug. 14) brought back memories of growing up in Los Angeles in the early 1940s. During the summer, a friend and I would cut lawns and clean yards in the morning to earn a dollar between us. We’d then pedal our bicycles to Harvard Playground and swim all afternoon, for a nickel if you were 11 or under, a dime for those over 12. And I learned to swim there. A set of lessons cost 25 cents.
