Delegates to the International Conference on Population and Development have spent a week in Cairo trying to hammer out a global population strategy for the next 20 years. The most contentious issue was abortion. Although the Vatican and some Islamic countries leveled strong opposition, in the end delegates adopted a policy that calls for protecting women from unsafe abortions but allows each nation to decide whether to legalize the procedure.
