SAILING : Doreste Makes a Strong Move

Share

Jose Luis Doreste of Spain, who helped to win two Star class world championships as crew for Antonio Gorostegui in 1982 and ‘83, made his best move toward winning one as skipper by finishing first in Tuesday’s third race of the 73rd Star worlds at San Diego.

Doreste was still far off the lead halfway through the event, having placed 29th and 30th in the first two races because, he said, “I was not inspired. (Those were) the most difficult races I have ever done.”

Canada’s Ross MacDonald, who won the second race, remained the overall leader after finishing seventh Tuesday. San Francisco’s John Kostecki was third with placings of 1-9-4.

The Etchells world championship at Newport Beach had a lay day Tuesday. Both competitions are scheduled to conclude Friday.
