Pacifica Relies on Summers to Beat Oilers

Share

Pacifica relied on the running and durability of senior Tommy Summers to control the clock in its 17-7 victory over Huntington Beach Thursday night.

Neither team managed much offense, with Pacifica (1-1) totaling 139 yards and the Oilers 98. However, Summers, a 5-foot-8, 170-pound senior, came through with the key plays for the Mariners. Although he had only two carries for more than 10 yards, he accounted for six of nine Mariner first downs and was key in their only extended scoring drive.

The Mariners took the lead on their first possession, after recovering an Oiler fumble on the Huntington Beach 14. Three plays later, Craig Chow connected on a 23-yard field goal for a 3-0 lead.

Craig Huffmire recovered another Oiler fumble at the Mariner 37 early in the second quarter, and Pacifica marched 63 yards, taking a 10-0 lead on a two-yard run by Paul Toepel. They extended that lead when Rudy Gonzales ran back the second-half kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown and a 17-0 lead.

Huntington Beach, which had a touchdown negated in the first quarter because of an inadvertent whistle, got on the board with 8:05 left as Brenton Wood punched in from two yards. The Oilers, who went 13-1 last season, are 0-2 on the young season.
