Joe Montana seems to always have his way with the Atlanta Falcons and doesn’t seem to know why.

“I have no idea,” he said Sunday night after passing for a Georgia Dome record 361 and two touchdowns, leading Kansas City to a 30-10 victory over the Falcons. “I wish I knew.”

Montana completed 28 of 39 passes, including touchdown passes of 13 and 34 yards to J.J. Birden, as the Chiefs remained unbeaten after three games, the first time they’ve been 3-0 since 1966, when they ended up in the first Super Bowl, losing to the Green Bay Packers.

It was Montana’s seventh victory in a row in Atlanta, the other six coming when he was with the San Francisco 49ers. It also lifted his career record in starts against the Falcons to 14-5, including 12 of his last 13.

It also gave him an 18-4 mark in domed stadiums, arenas in which he enjoys playing.

“I don’t throw the ball hard. There’s no wind in here. There’s no wind to hamper the ducks I throw,” he said, flashing a smile.

Montana was intercepted twice, but got plenty of help from a defense that forced the Falcons into six turnovers. There were two interceptions of Jeff George, who passed for 299 yards and Atlanta’s only touchdown, a 25-yarder to Andre Rison in the final quarter after Kansas City had built a 23-3 lead.

Derrick Thomas was the ringleader of the defense with a sack, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.

“Today everything worked--inside pressure, outside pressure and excellent coverage in the secondary,” Thomas said.

Much of the outstanding work in the secondary came from Dale Carter, who held Andre Rison to three catches for 72 yards.

The Chiefs wasted little time setting the tone when Carter ended George’s string of 279 passes without an interception, third-best in NFL history. Carter returned it 24 yards to the Atlanta 28, setting up the game’s first touchdown--a 16-yard pass play from Montana to Birden.
