ON THE ROAD, AGAIN: Some of the GM workers who left the Valley and moved to Anderson, Ind., in order to stay with the company may soon have to pack their bags again. . . . About 85 workers made the move east. Then, when GM sold part of its Anderson operations last month, they worried they might be out of work (D2). . . . But GM jobs now seem assured. One likely destination: Arlington, Tex.

HOT ISSUE: The long-running dispute about whether firefighters can read Playboy in fire stations is over. They can. The county’s decision not to appeal a ruling involving these sorts of magazines also was a victory for Antelope Valley Firefighter Steve Johnson (B1). . . . Playboy readers may have noticed that in June, in the midst of the debate, the magazine did a layout of female firefighters. Only coincidental, said the magazine’s Bill Farley: “It had been planned about 1 1/2 years in advance.”

YOUNG VOICE: Scott Himelstein is no Pat Summerall. Yet. But that’s OK. He’s still only in high school--and he’s already the radio voice of the Chaminade High Eagles in West Hills (C8). . . . The signal isn’t great, and the production isn’t smooth, but Himelstein (above) works hard. “The people love it,” said Ed Croson, the school’s athletic director. “The kid has started something.”

UNIFORMGATE: First, the truck was hijacked. Now, the computer is the culprit. Either way, the new uniform program at La Mesa Junior High in Santa Clarita has become one giant mess. . . . School officials will try to explain what happened at a meeting tonight (B1).

NO DUMMY: She’s the ditzy Ursula in “Mad About You,” and she’ll play the offbeat Phoebe in NBC’s “Friends,” premiering tonight. . . . Yet don’t get the idea that Lisa Kudrow is an airhead. A 1981 Taft High graduate, she majored in biology at Vassar College. She says some of her characterizations are “based on the smartest people I met.”
