Peacekeepers in the southwest found the badly decomposed bodies of 4,000 massacre victims at the scene of one of the worst atrocities in the country, a U.N. official said. At least 2,000 of the bodies were unburied, while the rest were found in a mass grave at Gafunzo, near the shores of Lake Kivu, said Maj. Jean-Guy Plante, a U.N. military spokesman.
