SCAG Says Airport Won’t Exceed Pollution Limits
The proposal to create a regional airport at the Navy’s Point Mugu base is taxiing toward further hearings.
The Southern California Assn. of Governments says a commercial airport at the base could accommodate 2 million passengers a year without exceeding air pollution rules. At first, SCAG’s experts said the proposed facility would violate the rules, but then the projected passenger load was reduced from an earlier estimate of 2.5 million annually.
Yet to be heard from are the County Board of Supervisors and a Joint Use Investigative Committee. The Navy, too, must take an official stand. And the issue could be further clouded if the Clinton Administration decides to include Mugu on its base-closure list.
