IBM, Apple Close to Agreement on Common Hardware Standard: The two computer companies could be selling the machines within two years, an industry source said. The firms have been trying to work out a standard for computers using the PowerPC microprocessor that would allow them to run software for both Apple Inc.’s operating system and Microsoft Corp.’s industry-dominating Windows. An executive familiar with the talks said on condition of anonymity that IBM and Apple “are extremely close to defining a common platform” that would let the companies sell such computers in about two years. Developing the standard could persuade software developers to write more programs for both the Apple and IBM operating systems.
