Baker’s Kick Lifts Arizona State, 36-35 : Pacific 10: Stanford loses on 38-yard field goal with six seconds left despite Stenstrom’s record-surpassing game.

Jon Baker kicked a 38-yard field goal with six seconds left to lift Arizona State past Stanford, 36-35, on Saturday night.

Stanford, 1-3-1, 0-2 in the Pacific 10, used a 98-yard drive and an interception to score 13 points in the fourth quarter to get a 35-27 lead.

But Arizona State (2-3, 2-1) drove 80 yards in eight plays to cut the lead to 35-33 on Ryan Wood’s 1-yard run with 9:27 left. The Sun Devils then held Steve Stenstrom, who became the Pac-10 career passing leader, to one first down on the next series.

Arizona State got the ball on its 22 with 5:20 left and Jake Plummer engineered a 16-play march to Baker’s kick, with the Devils converting three times on fourth down. Chris Hopkins got two yards on a fourth and two, Plummer dived for the marker on fourth and 12 then connected with Clyde McCoy on a 16-yard pass on fourth and 11 with 1:02 left.

After a false start penalty, Plummer hit Keith Poole with a 25-yard completion to put the ball on the Cardinal 22.

Plummer completed 23 of 39 passes for 274 yards and two touchdowns.

Stenstrom, who passed Erik Wilhelm on the Pac-10’s career passing yards list, was 28 of 36 for 313 yards and a touchdown.

He brought the Cardinal from a 20-8 halftime deficit to a 35-27 lead with 12:27 left.

Stanford’s Adam Salina got the first of his three touchdowns on a three-yard run with 13:21 left in the third period, but Arizona State came back later in the quarter when freshman Zack Romero got his first career reception, a nine-yard touchdown pass from Plummer.

Stenstrom completed 10 passes in a row at one stretch, leading Stanford on scoring drives of 80 and 98 yards for a 28-27 lead 36 seconds into the final period.

The Sun Devils got on the board first with Baker’s 29-yard field goal with eight minutes left.

Arizona State later drove to the Cardinal 17 but Terry Battle fumbled and Kwame Ellis recovered at the Stanford 10.

The Cardinal then drove to the Arizona State 48 when Kendall Rhyne forced Stenstrom to fumble. Harlen Rashada picked up the ball and ran 37 yards for the first touchdown of the night.

Stanford struck back when Damon Dunn returned the ensuing kickoff 100 yards for the first Cardinal kickoff return touchdown in six years. It tied a 44-year-old school record.

Baker added a 41-yard field goal with 6:08 left in the half. But the Sun Devils then put together a 65-yard drive, capped by Plummer’s 11-yard pass to Hopkins for the touchdown.
