Lessons of Bigotry

Deborah Hotaling is correct in her assumption that there is no such thing as an “easy” discussion on matters related to race, sex or homophobia (“Lessons Have to Be Learned Face to Face” Sept 19).

There is no nice or comfortable way to confront our often unexamined bigoted beliefs or assumptions. However, we can shed these beliefs through a process of self-examination and public dialogue.

Covering over the ugliness and hatred behind any form of bigotry with silence or “politically correct” rhetoric does nothing to move us any closer to a solution. Unlearning the lessons of bigotry can be no more painful and uncomfortable than living amid the fear and hatred it inspires.
