Report Rejects Last Link in Pan Am Highway

BOGOTA, Colombia —
Building the last 85-mile link of the Pan American Highway between Colombia and Panama would cause serious environmental damage, according to a new study.
The report, funded by the government, threatened to further stall a 70-year dream to join the Americas, from Alaska to Argentina, by highway.
The study says the highway and accompanying deforestation would endanger the rich ecosystem of the Darien Gap jungle, home to more than 450 types of birds, 500 species of vertebrates and rare plants.
