Drug Company to Sell $5 Cough Medicine in $50 Version: Carter-Wallace Inc. plans to sell sufferers of asthma and emphysema a new version of a $50-a-bottle drug without telling them the same medication is in common cough remedies selling for about $5. The pharmaceutical company says it has complied with medical rules concerning the prescription drug Organidin by informing doctors about the formula change. But lung disease specialists say Carter-Wallace is guilty of at least a breach of medical ethics. The United States ordered Carter-Wallace to change the formula this year after tests showed the main ingredient causes cancer in rats. The main ingredient in the new version is the same one in Robitussin DM, Vicks Formula 44E and a variety of generic cough and cold medicines.
