Chrysler Expected to Add a Shift at Neon: The No. 3 U.S. auto maker is reportedly ready to begin staffing a third shift at its assembly plant in Belvidere, Ill., a move that could mean hundreds of new jobs. Demand for the sporty, bubble-shaped car has outstripped supply since it was introduced in January. Chrysler officials would not comment, but a spokesman for the United Auto Workers union said management today would announce stepped-up production at the plant, which has been turning out cars at a rate of 300,000 a year. Chrysler also makes Neons in Mexico.
