World IN BRIEF : SINGAPORE : Frenchman to Get 5 Strokes of Cane

A French businessman has been sentenced to five strokes of the cane and 14 months in jail here, his lawyer said. Marcel Aime Faucher, 45, whose wife and two children live in France, pleaded guilty to two charges of cheating by writing bad checks and one of overstaying his visa. He received concurrent jail terms of six months each for the two cheating offenses, and eight months in jail and five strokes of the cane for overstaying his visa.
