World IN BRIEF : AUSTRIA : Former Syrian Envoy Is Arrested

Syria’s former ambassador to East Germany has been arrested on suspicion of helping to provide explosives to terrorist Carlos the Jackal, police said. The former diplomat was identified by the Austrian Press Agency as Faisal Summak. He was arrested in a Vienna hotel on an international warrant. Police said the Syrian ambassador from 1981 to 1989 ordered an aide to supply 15 pounds of explosives to Carlos, who was captured in August and now awaits trial in Paris.
