Orange County Almanac
Southern California had its own North versus South civil war in the 1880s when residents of what is today Orange County fought to secede from Los Angeles County.
Though bloodless, this civil war was spirited, according to the book “A Hundred Years of Yesterdays.”
Locals had many reasons for wanting their own county. The two often cited in history books:
* It cost $6 to take the stagecoach from Anaheim to the county seat in Los Angeles.
* The county’s only rolled fire hose was kept in Los Angeles.
After much debate and pressure, Orange County was born in 1889.
Today
P. J. O’Rourke, the conservative humorist and political pundit, will give a talk this morning at the Richard Nixon Library & Birthplace in Yorba Linda.
O’Rourke is a best-selling author of several books about politics and is often a panelist on Sunday morning news shows. He will offer his take on current events during the speech at 10 a.m.
