NORTHRIDGE : Kindergartners Sets Sights on Rabbit, Charity

“C” is for cookie, but for the kindergartners at the Abraham Joshua Heschel Day School, it also stands for carrots and charity.

To raise money to buy their class a bunny--and all the equipment and food to go with that wascally wabbit--and donate to local charities, the kindergartners hosted a schoolwide bake sale Thursday.

The tykes spent the past five days baking sweet treats of all sorts, from M & M-dotted cookies to marshmallow crispie treats, to be sold at 50 cents apiece along with a cup of punch.

With paper chef hats atop their heads, the youngsters sold their treats to the students and faculty at Heschel, an independent Jewish day school in Northridge.

“The whole idea is for them to get a sense of having earned it,” teacher Susan Goldman said. “It’s a learning experience.”

As a rabbit costs only $12, according to Goldman, the rest of the money will be split between donations to the Wildlife Defense Fund and to a local homeless agency.

“It’s tzedka which means charity,” Goldman said.
