From Times Staff and Wire Reports
A survey team started checking crack damage in the Vietnam Veterans Memorial to determine if panels should be repaired or replaced. Architects and engineers from the National Park Service began the task with special cameras and equipment. They are inspecting hairline cracks in some of the black reflective panels that make up the 500-foot-long wall inscribed with the names of over 58,200 American soldiers who died or are missing in Southeast Asia. The cause of the splits is not known.
