‘Carjacking’ Saga

Chronology of the South Carolina carjacking case:

Oct. 25--Susan Smith tells authorities her sons, 3-year-old Michael and 14-month-old Alexander, were taken by a gunman who jumped into her car at a stoplight. She says the man made her drive several miles before forcing her from the car and driving off with the boys.

Oct. 26--Smith pleads for the boys’ return. Police investigate report of a man fitting the description of the carjacker as a black man in his late 20s or early 30s--robbing a convenience store in Salisbury, N.C.

Oct. 27--The boys’ father, David Smith, makes a public plea for their return. Convenience store tip falls through. Divers search John D. Long Lake.

Oct. 28--Published reports say Susan Smith did not pass a polygraph test. Union County Sheriff Howard Wells says her stories have differed.

Nov. 1-- Authorities question Mitchell Sinclair, the friend Smith said she was going to visit the night the boys disappeared.

Nov. 2--The Smiths make another public appeal for the boys’ return. Reports say Smith failed another lie-detector test and investigators search her house.

Nov. 3--Smiths appear on morning TV news shows asking for help finding the boys. Susan Smith is arrested; her car is discovered in Lake John D. Long with the bodies of two children inside. Arrest warrants say Smith confessed to killing her sons.
