Strictly a Private Matter

In Karl Schoenberger’s article about a lovely Japanese garden, why did he have to allude to the imagined sexual leanings of people he didn’t even know (“In Search of Mr. Kato,” Oct. 9)? Such comments are unnecessary and out of place.

Like many unmarried people, Thomasella Hardeman Graham may have elected to remain single rather than spend her life regretting a poor marriage, one entered into because of what people might think. She could afford to remain independent; she did so, and that hardly means that there were no romances with male friends in her life. She wouldn’t have been the first, nor the last, to try to keep her private life private.
