Dozens of masked men attacked a McDonald’s restaurant in Mexico City on Tuesday in protest of Proposition 187, the California initiative to cut public benefits for illegal immigrants.

Between 30 and 40 men broke windows, threw cash registers to the floor, overturned wastebaskets and scrawled anti-U.S. graffiti inside the restaurant in the fashionable Zona Rosa area of the capital, McDonald’s marketing manager Manuel Juarez said.

“Yankee Go Home,” “Solidarity With the Immigrants” and “No to 187” were among the messages scrawled on restaurant windows.

Juarez said no one was injured.

Witnesses said some of the assailants had punk-style dyed hair and had held a protest earlier against Proposition 187 on the street outside the restaurant.

Although the franchise bears a U.S. trademark, Juarez said, it is owned and staffed by Mexicans.

Proposition 187 has sparked a bitter response from virtually all sectors of Mexican society. Nearly all mainstream Mexican newspapers condemned the measure as a racist proposal.
