For dedicated gardeners, here are suggestions from the California Assn. of Nurserymen on what to do in the garden this week:

* It’s time to apply the first spray to combat peach leaf curl.

* A potful of planted bulbs can be started now and given at Christmas.

* Spring and summer flowering perennials to plant now are canterbury bells, candytuft, foxglove, columbine, cineraria and sweet william.

* Fall is the time to pay attention to thatch build-up in your lawn. Water does not penetrate well through thatch and insects love to use it as their home. Fall is also the best time to put in a new lawn.
